A Homeowners Guide To Wood Flooring – Maintain Your Existing Hardwood Floors:

Hardwood flooring which has been well maintained can last for 30 years. This is plenty of time if you consider that wood is a natural material. To achieve this lifespan, the wood has to be well maintained. It is also widely accepted that a well maintained floor can help increase the value of your home, so it makes sense to pay attention to the following tips.

Cleaning – the key to a well maintained hardwood floor is regular cleaning using specific hardwood methods. This includes daily brushing of the floor with a soft haired broom and washing using a damp mop. Water and wood do not mix well, so never ever soak hardwood flooring in water. Always opt for a damp mop.

Stain and scratches – stain should be quickly removed to prevent more damage. Some stains, especially food and liquid can penetrate the wood, causing it damage in a similar manner to water. Use a damp mop to remove the stains or use a dedicated stain remover. You should also avoid dragging objects on the floor. If you were to drag furniture instead of picking it up, you will cause damage to the coating of the floor.

Coating – you already know that the coating is used to protect the floor. Depending on the quality of the wood, and on the foot traffic, you will need to re-coat the wood from time to time. The process may involved sanding of the floor and applying a fresh coat of oil. Talk to your flooring suppliers about your particular floor.

Enjoy your floor.
