Local worker is first to move – After renting in a house share for years, at 36 Aaron Yon decided it was time to step onto the property ladder. Like many first-time buyers, he worried whether he could afford to buy, but after a little research discovered that Thames Valley Housing (TVH) could offer him the springboard he needed to get onto that first step, through their part-buy, part-rent scheme New Build HomeBuy. Aaron registered with TVH last year and waited to for his ideal property. “I work at Clarks flour mill in Wantage” he explains, “and was looking for a property that would reduce my daily commute.
Local worker is first to move – At the moment I live in Grove and work is two miles away – I don’t drive, so the ideal property had to be in the local area. “I was interested in Thames Valley's development at St Mary’s because it’s so close to my work. When I visited the show home I was impressed by the design, quality and the attention to detail. The contemporary style of the apartment is great and I especially liked the kitchen. What’s more, the people at TVH were really helpful and ready to answer all of my questions”. Aaron used the New Build HomeBuy scheme to purchase 30% of his first floor one-bedroom apartment for £39,000, in the first release at the new St Mary’s development in the heart of Wantage.
He pays subsidised rent on the remaining 70% to TVH and plans to ‘staircase’ to buy more of his property in the future. “I’m really looking forward to moving in and meeting the neighbours,” says Aaron. “It’ll be great to have more personal space, especially my own kitchen. Though I do enjoy nights out at the local pub, I plan to have family and friends over for nights in more often now!” St Mary’s is a development of one, two and three bedroom apartments as well as two, three and four-bedroom houses available through the New Build HomeBuy scheme. New Build HomeBuy is a government-led part-buy, part-rent initiative, aimed at helping first time buyers, and those looking for help to buy their own home, get on the property ladder affordably. To apply to the scheme, purchasers need to have an annual household income of between £18,000 and £60,000, and can register with their local HomeBuy Agent. The first phase of the development has now completely sold out, but phase two is due for release in Spring 2010 and Thames Valley Housing are already taking enquiries. The second phase will include three and four-bedroom houses as well as one to three-bedroom spacious refurbished apartments. Prices to be confirmed. Built by Berkeley Homes, each property at St Mary’s will be finished to an exceptional standard with floor coverings throughout and fitted kitchens including fridge / freezer and washer / dryer, oven, hob and extractor hood, and contemporary fitted bathrooms. Each property has allocated parking and all new build apartments will have gas central heating, with houses heated by air source heat pumps. The show apartment is now open from Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 5pm where a representative of the HomeBuy team will be present to explain how shared ownership works, and how it can help first-time buyers get on to the property ladder in Wantage.
