DIY Paver Patio Ideas: 11 Steps to Follow

Constructing a patio is not an easy task. However, patio is the best place to relax and to unwind together with the whole family. This is the best place to spend happy moments like reading books, and barbecuing. The DIY paver patio ideas below can help you construct the best patio design for the whole family.

Layout

Start building your patio by doing a layout. Measure the length and width of the surface area. However, before start digging, call the utility company in your locality and request for a one call service so that the buried gas, electric and water lines are identified. Do not worry for the expenses because most of the utility companies are free of charge. Once there are marked indicators, you will know the right place to dig.

Height

Determine the height of the patio. The ideal height should be above the surrounding area of the ground. This is to avoid rainwater to get into the surface. Consider the thickness of the paver stone. Be sure to have a six inch gravel foundation. A strong patio can last longer but it depends on the foundation.

Excavation

When all considerations are already prepared, excavate the area and tamp the surface of the dirt firmly according to the ideal height.

Protect from Weeds

Protect the patio from unwanted weeds by using a landscape fabric or any kinds of weed barrier materials. The fabric can help prevent weeds from growing to the pavers and prevent from surface sagging.

Graveling

The whole area must be filled with four inches crushed gravel layer. You must level it correctly and make sure that the slope of the patio is consistent.

Spreading of Sand

After marking off the area and proper measurement, lay the sand bed. If the area is small, smoothen the area with a hand tamper. However, if the area of the patio is bigger, an electric powered tamper is best to use.

Screeding of Sand

You need to screed the sand. Once it is finished, you need to frame first the area using landscape edging before laying the pave stones. The most recommended material to use is the aluminum because this is flexible, lightweight, does not warp, and very easy to use.

Edging

The edging must be laid out next to the perimeter and then cut according to length using metal shears. To avoid harm from the sharp edges of the aluminum, use heavy duty gloves to protect the hands. The edge must be secured by driving nails of 8 inches to the pre-drilled holes. Use a sledge hammer when doing the job.

Place the Pavers

To make sure the pavers are straight, snap a chalk line next to the patio edges before laying the pavers. To have a nice framed, the outer row must be placed perpendicular towards the inner rows. Once they are hanged, your patio will have its shape in less time.

Cutting of Odd Pieces

Cut odd pieces of the pavers if it is needed by using a chisel. In case lots of pavers need to be broken, use a wet saw to make things fast.
With the use of paver patio ideas, you can make a relaxing place to unwind during weekends.
